A mechanistically motivated approach was used to develop iron-based complexes supported by β-diketiminate ligands as catalysts for cross-coupling reactions between unactivated boronic esters and alkyl halides. Using logical ligand design principles, catalyst optimization was possible to afford efficient cross-coupling reactions involving difficult substrates, such as heteroaryl boronic esters and tertiary alkyl halides. Products resulting from these reactions either constitute valuable substrates to the pharmaceutical industry or are unusual examples where cross coupling reactions have been applied to assemble sterically encumbered, quaternary centers. A discussion of the working mechanistic hypothesis for the cross-coupling reaction and preliminary mechanistic experiments will be provided and contextualized with respect to similar reactions catalyzed by nickel-based and palladium-based complexes.
