Zeolites are naturally occurring aluminosilicates that have long been studied for their use as adsorption media and catalysts. The porous, three-dimensional framework, comprised of repeating segments of aluminate (AlO4)5- and silicate (SiO4)4- tetrahedral moieties carries a partial negative charge on the bridging oxygen atoms. The pore residing charge compensating ions required to maintain charge neutrality are attracted to these negatively charged sites, but are not rigorously bound to the zeolite framework. These cations maintain considerable mobility within the zeolite and understanding their movement and behavior within the pore network is of critical importance to various applications of zeolites. Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform spectroscopy (DRIFT) is used along with a probe molecule to measure long-range, solid state intercrystallite cation diffusion between dissimilar zeolite types. Results from long range migration studies of Na+, Cu+2, Co+2, Ni+2 and Pb+2 between Zeolite A and Zeolite ZSM-5 using pyridine as a probe molecule are presented.
