Transition metal complexes with pendant arenes have been demonstrated to support diverse chemistry including deoxygenation of CO, carbide-CO coupling, nitride-CO coupling, CO2 activation, and cross-coupling chemistry. To further expand on the utility of pendant arenes in redox chemistry, an anthracene linked bisphenoxide ligand was designed for early transition metals. Two electron chemistry was observed with Zr and Ti complexes where the redox events are based on the anthracene motif. Transformations such as C-C reductive coupling and oxidative coupling of alkynes with nitriles or CO2 have been observed. Pyrimidines can be prepared catalytically with high selectivity in this system. The role of the redox-active anthracene motif will be discussed.
