A series of zinc-ceria solid solution nanoparticles was synthesized using microwave precipitation method. Powdered x-ray diffraction (PXRD) analysis showed a linear decrease in lattice parameter, in agreement with Vegard’s law, which is indicative of formation of homogenous solid solution. No phase separation was observed up to a zinc concentration of 16%. The average crystallize size of the particles was found to be within 3-6 nm. BET measurements displayed high surface area (&gt;150 m2/g) for the series. Temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) studies for the series with adsorbed methanol displayed products of H2, CO, and CO2, with both desorption temperature and product distribution dependent on zinc content. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to study the surface chemical composition and environment for the samples as synthesized, with adsorbed methanol, and post-TPD.
