H2S is a main contributor of odor from the drainage system, sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) under anaerobic condition generates and releases H2S by its metabolic activity. The odor problem is always a big task for nowaday urbanized communities, because of the health impact and disturbance to the public. A controlled-release gel, hydrogel that designed to reduce and inhibit the SRB is studied and assessed to its operational performance on H2S suppression in Hong Kong with cooperating the Hong Kong Drainage Service Department (DSD). A sewer line in Wing Lung Street and a storm drain in Jordan Valley are assigned by DSD for the year-long study in practical use of hydrogel. Wing Lung Street sewer line is a sewer line collecting sewage from nearby living estates and wet market which has a volumetric flowrate from 0.3 to 1 cubic meter per second, with an average COD level 1206 ppm, BOD level 452 ppm, and dissolved sulphide 1 ppm. Jordan Valley Box Culvert is a storm drain that collect rain water with an average flowrate of 0.02 to 8 cubic meter per second, COD level 79 ppm, BOD level 55 ppm and dissolved sulphide lower than 0.1 ppm. This study is conducted from 2018 to 2019 and shows an overall suppression on the maximum average concentration of H2S from 4 ppm to lower than 0.1 ppm over 3 weeks period in both Wing Lung Street and Jordan Valley, a 60% disinfection effect on population of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria after deployed hydrogel while maintaining the water quality factors (COD, BOD and dissolved sulphide).
