Hydrogen is an ideal candidate for next-generation energy carrier whereas its production has long suffered from the high cost and low efficiency. Thermo-photo catalytic water splitting showed significantly advanced performance for hydrogen production due to the synergistic roles of thermo-energy and photo-energy. A low-cost Ni@NiO-loaded TiO<sub>2</sub> catalyst was demonstrated to achieve a high photohydrogen evolution rate under visible light irradiation (λ&gt;420 nm), which was 5 orders of magnitude greater than that conducted at room temperature. Furthermore, impressive apparent quantum efficiencies up to 66.24% and 15.35% were obtained at 380 and 500 nm respectively. The mechanism of the thermo-photo catalysis was deeply evaluated by isotope tracer experiments. These findings highlight the great promise of this newly-born area.
