One of the most fundamental things we chemists do is figure out the composition of our molecules and materials.   Self-assembled monolayers of thiols on (flat) gold is the quintessential example of a system that seems simple, but took numerous methods and years to figure out the details.  For curved inorganic surfaces, some literature reports curvature-independent ligand coverage, while others report curvature-dependent coverage.   In this talk I will describe two recent studies in my laboratory in which we quantify the density of organic ligands around gold nanocrystals and gold nanorods of various dimensions, using quantitative STEM/EELS imaging and NMR as orthogonal techniques.<br/>
