With the increasing attention of renewable biomass resources, the extraction of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from renewable biomass has a great prospect. In this work, a series of acid-base bifunctional heterogeneous catalysts (Ch-AgHPWs) were synthesized using phosphotungstic acid (H3PW12O40, HPW), AgNO3 and chitin, and characterized by XRD, FT-IR, pyridine-FT-IR, SEM, XPS and NMR. The synthesized Ch-AgHPWs were applied in the conversion of cellulose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) under double solvent system containing methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) and H2O. It was found that both acid-base property and hydrolysis ability of the precursor (AgHPW) could be regulated by introducing various amount of chitin. Specifically, the HPW played an essential role in Brønsted acid, while the AgNO3 and the chitin contributed Lewis acid and amino base, respectively; their synergistic effect thus rendered an improved catalytic performance compared to pure HPW in the HMF production. Under optimized conditions, a remarkable HMF yield of 81.0% was obtained in the presence of Ch-AgHPW at 140°C for 8 h. Even for raw lignocellulosic biomass like Jatropha hulls, this catalytic system could give a HMF yield of 26.3% without further process. In addition, such heteropolyacid-based catalysts showed good stability and could be reused for at least five times with HMF yields of above 75% from cellulose. This study provides a new method to realize the high-efficiency conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to HMF.
