NASA has long been involved in satellite remote sensing of water quality data for oceans, coasts, estuaries, and inland bodies of water and in the delivery of products that enable Earth science to serve society. This presentation will give examples of NASA water quality efforts, covering a current project and future satellite capabilities. The Cyanobacteria Assessment Network (CyAN) is an ongoing inter-agency effort (NASA, EPA, NOAA, USGS) to use satellite data to detect algal blooms in U.S. inland lakes. Toxic cyanobacteria blooms threaten ecosystem function, public health, and water supplies and are an increasing concern as blooms become more frequent and intense. We highlight events that have led to high interest in a cyanobacteria index remote sensing algorithm, big picture applications for CyAN, and efforts to share bloom information via a mobile app. The CyAN project demonstrates the ability to move from problems to solutions through scientific understanding, collaboration, and information sharing. The upcoming Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem (PACE) mission represents NASA’s next great investment in satellite ocean color and the study of Earth’s ocean-atmosphere system, enabling new insights into oceanographic and atmospheric responses to Earth's changing climate. Applications of PACE hyperspectral ocean color and atmospheric satellite data products encompass, including fisheries management, water and air quality monitoring, and climate system science. We present an overview of the PACE mission, including its developmental history, science objectives, instrument payload, and data products.
