Innovation in the synthesis and design of physical properties in colloidal inorganic nanocrystals has been largely empirical since the inception of colloidal nanocrystal synthesis roughly 25 years ago. Such studies often rely on trial and error to optimize reaction conditions and tune material properties such as crystallographic phase, size, morphology, and monodispersity. This approach has proved particularly difficult in III–V semiconductors, which feature high metal–metalloid and metalloid–metalloid covalency and kinetically persistent cluster intermediates. Recent synthetic advancements in InP have relied on the use of an aminophosphine precursor to direct syntheses that allows for a better mechanistic understanding. This design paradigm is extended in this work to copper phosphide nanocrystals with the purpose of accessing tunability of their material and optical properties. A new high-quality, one-pot, heat-up strategy for making colloidally stable, plasmonic Cu3-xP nanoplatelets is presented. Modulation of the localized surface plasmon resonance of nanoscale Cu3-xP is achieved post-synthetically using molecular redox agents.
