I am often asked why and how my group was able to move into so many different areas of research. The answer is that we took the unexpected outcome of experiments very seriously and spared no effort to identify the reason. In doing so we crossed borders between organic, inorganic, physical, and biological chemistry. In the lecture I will describe some of the resulting Magical Mystery Tours, in which Organic Synthesis always played a pivotal role.
