Nucleic acids (DNA/RNA) carry the genetic instructions for viruses to replicate in their host cells; therefore, damaging viral nucleic acids is an effective way to inactivate viruses and reduce risks of waterborne infection. This presentation explores the reactions that occur in viral nucleic acids during photochemical reactions and reactions with chemical oxidants. We will directly compare the reaction kinetics of ssRNA, dsRNA, ssDNA, and dsDNA and will span several levels of nucleic acid reactivity, from the short, nucleic acid oligomer level, up to the entire viral genome encapsidated in virus particles. Our results demonstrate that nucleic acid reactivity varies by orders of magnitude depending on the nucleic acid type and structure. We will end with a discussion on the impact of nucleic acid reactions on virus infectivity.<br/>
