Photochemistry via photosynthesis is central to the biochemical production of biomass from inorganic forms of carbon, nitrogen, sulfur and phosphorus. Photochemistry is also an important mechanism for the breakdown of biochemically recalcitrant biomass back into inorganic forms. This has been documented for C (CO2), N (NH3), and P (PO43-). We have recently extended this list to include S as SO42-. This presentation will focus on the role of amino acids in these reactions and will discuss implications for biogeochemical processes in surface and atmospheric waters.
