The city of Mbarara, Uganda is the urban center in the southwestern region of this country, and is the crossroads for vehicular traffic to Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.  Many of the people continue to use wood and charcoal as their main fuel for cooking.  Due to the combustion of these fuels, the lack of emissions control, and the effluent of various industries within Mbarara, the main water source for the city, the River Rwizi, is heavily impacted.  In this study, we surveyed the River Rwizi in March 2019 for polyaromatic hydrocarbons and heavy metals in surface water and sediments as indicators of anthropogenic impact.  This study will present the analysis of these samples collected from a transect that includes rural and urban sampling sites.
