Providing access to clean water is one of the grand challenges in society. Catalysis technology can provide a new means to upgrade contaminated water to a quality level that matches its intended use, if operational constraints (ambient temperature, atmospheric pressure, variable water quality) can be overcome with materials with improved properties. The impact of water quality on catalytic "clean water" reactions is not well established. Two example catalytic reaction systems will be presented to illustrate the importance of pH and ionic strength on a reduction reaction (nitrite hydrogenation) and an oxidation reaction (in situ H2O2 formation).
