Previously reported thiophene-functionalized <i>N-</i>heterocyclic carbene (NHC) monomers for the preparation of metallopolymers feature an imidazole-2-ylidene moiety directly embedded into the π-conjugated backbone. In contrast a new terthiophene-based NHC ligand was designed with the imidazole-2-ylidene tethered to the π-conjugated backbone. An emissive terthiophene-based imidazolium salt was synthesized and it served as a precursor for the corresponding NHC ligand. The Pd, Pt, Rh and Ir complexes of the new NHC ligand were synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The emission quenching mechanism of the Pd complex was characterized by fluorimetry and the mechanism was studied by density functional theory (DFT). The Rh and Ir complexes exhibit enantiotropic polymorphism with the crossover temperature between the two forms occurring at about 140 K. New metallopolymers can be prepared via electropolymerization through the terthiophene backbones. The polythiophene-based electrochromic properties were studied by UV-vis-NIR spectroelectrochemistry.
