Water channel proteins, called aquaporins, are crucial to biological systems. They can transport water in an efficient and selective manner to regulate the osmotic pressure of cells. The development of bioinspired artificial water channels displaying high water permeability and selectivity not only is fundamentally important but also may lead to the generation of environmental materials, for example, for water purification and desalination. In the past years, we have developed a strategy to construct the artificial water channels from unimolecular tubular structures by mimicking the key structures of aquaporins. The permeability of the channels is close to that of aquaporins. The most important is that, similar to aquaporins, the channels are able to reject ions. In the presentation, the relationship between the channel structures and transport activity will also be presented.
