Recently, the splitting of water becoming an interesting research topic because hydrogen gas can be used as a clean fuel and oxygen being a side product. We seek to design robust catalysts, slowing down the rate of undesired catalyst degradation to achieve high turnover. The Ru(bda)L2 (bda = 2,2’-bipyridine-6,6’-dicarboxylate) complexes are popular because the tetradentate chelation of bda and a wide O-Ru-O angle are part of what result in redox potential RuII/III more negative over a wide pH range compared to other Ru WOCs. However, axial ligand dissociation reported in the context of Ru(bda) complexes. Here we desired to benefit from (bda) equatorial ligand and modifying ligands at diaxial positions as more strongly bonded to Ru to postpone the catalyst degradation. For doing that, we envisage 2 different strategies: (1) trans-spanning ligands that use the chelate effect, connecting the two isoquinoline by an olefin bridge, and a large cavity between isoquinoline presents no hindrance to the metal to interact with H2O. (2) Bis(phosphine)Ru(bda) by having unique chemistry (oxidation and reductive) and ability to tune the stereoelectonic feature of metal complex, is an ideal candidate as a WOC.
