The Sulfur(VI) Fluoride Exchange (SuFEx) chemistry is another embodiment of click chemistry introduced by Sharpless group, where SVI-F containing molecules such as sulfonyl fluorides and aryl fluorosulfates can react with appropriate nucleophiles with high efficiency. Recently, SuFEx has found promising applications both in material science and chemical biology. Thus, the development of new reagents which facilitate the synthesis of SuFEx-able molecules is of high desire. On top of the existing reagents including SO2F2 and SOF4, we herein found another powerful reagent, fluorosulfonic anhydride (FSO2OSO2F), which could transfer a -SO2F moiety to various nucleophiles, delivering diversified scaffolds for SuFEx chemistry. In particular, the high reactivity of the anhydride successfully converts catechols to benzene-1,2-bisfluorosulfates which are hardly accessible with other reagents and methods.
