For TiO2 white pigment production via short sulfate process, the hydrolysis of industrial low concentration titanyl sulfate (TiOSO4) solution was the crucial step which would influence the structure and properties of TiO2, and obtained metatitanic acid sample with predominantly amorphous component, containing a small amount of anatase crystal structure of particles, with the TiO6 octahedral distortion, and with the crystal parameters of a-axis reducing and c-axis increasing. These samples had porous structures, with specific surface area of about 286 m2/g, small pore size and large pore volume. After calcining of metatitanic acid, volatilization of water and decomposition of SO42- led to a sharp decrease in specific surface area, an increase in grain coalescence, an increase in particle gap and a decrease in pore volume. After prolonging the hydrolysis time, the grain size increased, and the grain growth could be divided into three stages: rapid growth, the transition and the slow grain growth. The obtained metatitanic acid particles through the hydrolysis process via short sulfate process were with the size of 1-2 μm. After 70 0C drying, metatitanic acid powder with size of 0.2-1.2 μm, and average particle size was of 583nm. The particle size of metatitanic acid was affected by the content of colloidal particles, primary particles size and grinding intensity.
