The desulfurization of petroleum feedstocks is an essential industrial process for limiting the release of various toxic sulfur oxide by-products into the environment. Although noble transition metals (e.g. Pt, Ru, Ir, etc.) have been utilized for the activation of C-S bonds, their high cost and high toxicity have limited their wide-spread use. Cheap, earth-abundant nickel has been shown to be a promising candidate for this catalytic transformation. Dehydrobenzoannulene (DBA) units are capable of forming strong metal complexes with Ni(0), making them promising candidates as ligands for Ni-catalysis. Incorporation of a DBA monomer into a 2D covalent organic framework (COF) yields an insoluble polymer suitable for hosting Ni(0). Ni-DBA-2D-COF provides access to the DBA-Ni(0) catalytic manifold, while also allowing for its use as a recyclable heterogeneous catalyst. This presentation will emphasize a rare example of DBA-Ni(0) as a catalytically active system, and its incorporation into a heterogeneous platform for the recyclable cleavage of inert C-S bonds.
