Leveraging well-characterized nickel(I) molecular complexes, their reactivity with O2, S8, and Se has been explored with emphasis on identifying the electronic and geometric structures of the resulting species. This presentation will focus on O2 activation leading to a dioxygen-nickel adduct capable of intermolecular C–H activation. Kinetic and mechanistic investigations lead to a detailed understanding of the reaction pathway, invoking a hydroperoxo-nickel(II) species generated by rate-limiting C–H bond activation. Time permitting, C–S activation via insertion of a nickel(I) complex leading to an unusual nickel(II)–thiyl radical species will be described.
