Metal complexes have been explored recently as molecular building blocks for high-density data storage and quantum computing applications, where data are encoded as magnetic spin states or a superposition thereof. However, magnetic transitions in metal complexes are often difficult to characterize due to overlapping phonon modes and spin-phonon coupling interactions. We have utilized several spectroscopic methods to comprehensively study magnetic properties—including spin-phonon couplings—of Co(PPh3)2X2 (X = Cl, Br, I) compounds. Results from far-IR magneto-spectroscopy (FIRMS), Raman magneto-spectroscopy, inelastic neutron scattering (INS), and high-field electron paramagnetic resonance (HFEPR) studies will be discussed.
