Biological nitrogen can be accessed in many oxidation states, spanning the 5+ oxidation state of nitrate to the 3- oxidation state of ammonia.  Cytochrome <i>c</i> nitrite reductase is one metalloenzyme capable of aiding in the reduction of nitrite to ammonia.  While there are numerous systems capable of mimicking this reactivity electrocatalytically, synthetic systems are fewer.  Herein we report the a synthetic iron system capable of carrying out the stepwise reduction of nitrite to ammonia through an isolated iron-nitrosyl intermediate.  We propose that the secondary coordination sphere installed on the ligand framework plays an integral role in the protonation of the nitrogen-containing substrates to afford the ammonia.
