This session will address the adaption of Mike Caulfield’s strategies for evaluating information in an online environment to a general chemistry information literacy lab, and the further adaption of that lab activity to an online environment. In 2019, the science librarian collaborated with the lab instructors to modify the Caulfield’s Four Moves and a Habit to one-shot lab session. When Seattle University pivoted to completely online instruction in March 2020, the librarian and the chemistry department needed to move the established General Chemistry information literacy session to a synchronous virtual environment. The active learning lesson involved students working with their lab partners to use Mike Caulfield's strategies to fact-check a popular science article that students found online. The lab instructors and the science librarian successfully moved the activity to a synchronous Zoom session that used a pre-class readings and quiz, a collaborative Google document, and the use of Zoom break-out rooms to create an engaging and impactful virtual activity. The original move to a collaborative document-based activity facilitated the second pivot to the online environment. As an instruction strategy it allows the teaching librarian to check in with individuals or groups of students in Zoom break out rooms. The combination of the class material and the class structure addresses both the changing skills that students need for engaging with science information outside of the classroom, and for an engaging synchronous activity in a digital environment.
