In this research, water samples from rivers in southwestern Pennsylvania during 2020-2021 were studied to determine the contamination levels of eight common pharmaceutical compounds (ibuprofen, acetaminophen, naproxen, carbamazepine, chlorophen, caffeine, estrone, and triclosan). All water samples were extracted and concentrated using solid phase extraction (SPE) followed by derivatization using N,O-Bis(trimethylsilyl)trifluoroacetamide and 1% methyltrichlorosilane. Optimized GC-MS conditions were used to analyze the derivatized samples. Multi-level calibration standards were prepared for each compound and used to determine the recovery of the analytical procedure and the limit of detection (LOD) for each compound.
