Two-dimensional van der Waals materials (2D-vdW) have aroused strong research interest owing to their fascinating electrical, optical, chemical and thermal properties. They have been demonstrated in a wide range of applications such as thermal imaging, telecom, photovoltaic, light emitting diode and photodetector. On the other hand, the monolayer 2D-vdW results in a weak absorption, limiting their optoelectronic applications. Combining 2D-vdW with semiconducting materials such as quantum dots, polymers or even biological motifs can enhance the light harvesting properties of the resulting hybrids. In this presentation, I will talk about hybrids based on 2D-vdW semiconductors to obtain new or improved functionality through energy transfer or charge transfer for applications like light harvesting, solar photovoltaics and nanophotonics. I will also show some examples of how interface engineering in such hybrids can be utilized to promote desired functionality or improved optoelectronic behavior.
