Reactive carbonyl species (RCSs) including one carbon formaldehyde (FA) and dicarbonyl compounds such as methylglyoxal (MGO) and glyoxal (GO) are produced in human physiology during the activity of various demethylase enzymes and glucose metabolic pathways respectively. Elevation of the RCSs concentrations in human physiology leads to various deleterious DNA damage, glycation adducts which further generates to various neurotoxic diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease as well as carcinoma. Hence, regular monitoring of these RCSs with an easy tool is of utmost interest. However, conventional methods such as chromatography and mass spectrometry for the detection of these species are not so economically viable. These issues were well addressed by the non-invasive reactivity-based fluorescence techniques. However, tedious synthesis, only specific to either mono or dialdehyde is limited to detect multiple RCSs in physiologies by synthesized fluorophores. An alternative, simple small molecules are widely applied as commercial biomarkers such as terephthalate and 2,3-diaminonaphthalene (NAP) for hydroxyl radical (OH.) and nitric oxide (NO) respectively. Herein, we report 1,8 Diaminonaphthalene (DAN) as a unique fluorescent probe for simultaneous detection of RCSs (FA, MGO and GO) in physiology and extracellular imaging in cancerous cells. Furthermore, an introduction of an acceptor group into the DAN generate even more promising ICT based DAS fluorescent probe for simultaneous detection of RCSs (FA, MGO and GO) and discrimination among mono and dialdehydes. This DAS shows good efficiency for RCSs imaging within cytosolic environment in cancerous cells as well as analysis of preserved food samples.
