As an effective supplement to petrochemicals, coal-derived liquids can fully widen the application methods and range of fossil fuels. Due to the influence of coal formation process, the nitrogen content in coal liquefied oil is as high as 4500ppm, and the nitrogen-containing compounds will inhibit hydrodesulfurization and do great harm to the utilization of coal-derived liquids, which lead to instant requirements of hydrodenitrogenation to clean fuel. However, the higher thermal stability of carbon-nitrogen bond in nitrogen-containing heterocyclic ring than carbon-sulfur bond and the thermodynamic disadvantage of hydrodenitrogenation lead to the difficulty of hydrodenitrogenation. In this paper, the performance of typical nitrogen-containing compounds removal and the active sites of carbon-nitrogen bond cleavage has been conducted with a highly active Ru metal catalyst. The Ru-based catalysts were prepared by impregnation method with inert SiO2 support, evaluated with quinoline and decahydroquinoline as model compounds in a tank reactor. Meanwhile, the dispersion of active metal could be regulated by calcination in different atmospheres. The characterization of the catalysts were measured by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2-adsorption specific surface area measurements (BET), H2-temperature programmed reduction (H2-TPR), and the metal dispersion was measured by CO pulse and O2 pulse chemisorption.. The results showed that the catalysts calcinated in nitrogen atmosphere have a higher Ru dispersion than that in air, providing more C-N cleavage activity correspondingly, which supplied high activity for C-N bond cleavage of hydrogenated saturated products. In addition, the reaction products were mainly composed of saturated cycloalkane.
