Nanoscale zerovalent Iron (nZVI) and Manganese oxide Nanoparticles (MnO2-Nps) were synthesized by bottom-up approach via chemical reduction in an anaerobic chamber. They were characterized by analytical physicochemical and spectroscopic techniques. BET surface area (nZVI 20.8643 m2/g; MnO2-Nps 131.3490 m2/g); BJH Adsorption cumulative surface area of pores (nZVI 19.120 m2/g; nZVMn 132.073 m2/g); BJH volume pores nZVI 0.115083 cm3/g, nZVMn 0.611320 cm3/g); average pore width (nZVI 186.9268 Å; MnO2-Nps 170.4736 Å) BJH adsorption average pore diameter nZVI 240.753 Å; MnO2-Nps 185.147 Å). The point of zero charge (PZC) of nZVI and MnO2-Nps are 5.64 and pH 6.35 respectively. FTIR functional group characteristics are found in the range 686 – 434 cm-1nZVI; 690 – 570 cm-1 MnO2-Nps. Surface morphology and sizes determined by SEM and TEM revealed spherical chain-like of nZVI and trapezonal coarse, rough and crake surface of MnO2-Nps in the range of 15.425 nm −97.566 nm for nZVI and 6.120 nm – 99.428 nm for MnO2-Nps. Elemental distribution as revealed by EDX indicated an intense peak of nZVI at 6.2 keV and range of 0.6 and 5.9 keV for MnO2-Nps. Energy Dispersive XRF revealed elemental percentage composition of nZVI (96.05%) and MnO (94.09%). X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed a broad peak between 38o – 42o nZVI and 32o – 58o MnO2-Nps indicating the amorphous nature of the nanoparticles. The unique properties of nZVI and MnO2-Nps enlisting them as promising nanoparticles that would find application in the removal of endocrine disruptive chemicals (EDC) and industrial wastewater treatment.
