Generating publishable data with inexperienced undergraduate researchers can be incredibly challenging. Two case studies from the LaLonde lab at Reed College will be presented along with the best practices and lessons learned. The first case study will describe a research-based lab curriculum in which students explored the preparation alpha-hydroxy nitrate derivatives of terpenes. Later independent research projects on the kinetics & reactivity of these compounds will also be discussed. The second case study will describe the student-driven development of selective estrogen receptor modulators for the treatment of breast cancer.
