Polymers are important materials that are used in a wide range of fields, including medicinal chemistry and material science. End-functionalization of hydroxy-terminated polymers by “click-chemistry” is often inefficient, expensive and time intensive. An alternative approach to functionalize this class of polymers is to directly couple the hydroxyl-group to aryl halides using Ir and Ni-catalysts in the presence of blue-light. This approach, which is currently being used to synthesize small molecules, is more efficient and cost effective than current synthetic routes. Additionally, this technique can be applied to a wide range of hydroxy-terminated polymers and may find utility in both basic and applied research.
