Catalytic oxidative desulfurization is emerging as a potential alternative to deep hydroprocessing due to its milder operating conditions and no hydrogen requirements. In this study, a series of metal-incorporated TUD-1 catalysts was prepared by a facile one-pot surfactant-free triethanolamine (TEA)-assisted hydrothermal method. The synthesized supports, with nominal Si/M molar ratio of 40 (where M = Al, Zr, Fe, Cu, or Ce), were impregnated with heteropoly phosphomolybdic acid (20 wt.% Mo loading) and applied for the catalytic oxidation desulfurization of hydrotreated coker light gas oil (KLGO). Physicochemical properties of the supports and heteropoly phosphomolybdic acid (HPMo) loaded catalysts were characterized using techniques such as N2-sorption, FT-IR, TG-DTG, X-ray diffraction (XRD), XPS, SEM and HRTEM. Powder XRD analyses of the catalysts confirmed the highly dispersed MoO3 nanoparticles on the CeTUD-1 support as compared to its metal-incorporated counterparts. Isomorphous substitution of Ce3+ ions into the silicate framework of TUD-1 enhanced the formation of Ce-Mo-O phase and more surface MoO3 species as corroborated by XRD and XPS analyses, respectively. Catalytic oxidation desulfurization performances of the catalysts were evaluated at T = 70°C, time = 2h, and stirring rate = 550 rpm using KLGO in a batch reactor with hydrogen peroxide as an oxidizing agent. By using cumene hydroperoxide as an oxidant, sulfur removal could reach ~93 wt.%, with the efficiency of oxidants for ODS following the order: cumene hydroperoxide (~93%) &gt; tert-butyl hydroperoxide (~81%) &gt; hydrogen peroxide (~72%) &gt; molecular oxygen (~23%) &gt; No oxidant (~2%) for the novel HPMo/CeTUD-1 catalyst.
