The avocado (Persea americana) is a widely consumed fruit due to its wide range of nutritional values and health benefits. Each fruit contains a large seed which comprises 13-18% of the size of the whole fruit. Commonly, the buttery flesh part is consumed and the seed is tossed into a trash can (waste). Although some preliminary research works indicating the therapeutic effects of the seed powder and/or the uses of this powder as a facial mask, hair/skin conditioner have been reported but the seed husk (testa) is still thrown away (waste of waste). As a part of our ongoing research on exploring neglected botanicals and food/agricultural waste, we have carried out a bio-activity guided extraction and isolated two novel steroids from the ethanolic extract of the avocado seed husk (testa). The structure of the molecules has been determined by IR, 1D- and 2D-NMR experiments, and HRMS analyses. The structure and stereochemistry of one of the steroids have been confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analyses. A concise report will be presented.
