The design and aeromechanical assessment of turbomachinery blades and vanes comprise of a wide range of complex processes that are based on conventional deterministic method. These assessments often provide a ‘snapshot’ evaluation of the new component designs in nominal conditions. While the deterministic methods can predict the HCF endurance with reasonable accuracy; they assume that the conservative safety factors, which are applied to cover the variations and uncertainties, will not change during the product life cycle. This approach can be over-pessimistic and may over-look lack of robustness.

The present paper recommends using robust design analysis approach based on probabilistic methodology for aeromechanical assessment of rotor blades and stator vanes of turbomachinery. The robust design assessment accounts explicitly for the effects of design and manufacturing variability. This methodology can reduce the levels of conservatism in the deterministic approach, replace it or can complement it by providing a more thorough risk assessment.

This paper proposes a generalised aeromechanical analysis formulation based on probabilistic methods to evaluate the HCF capability of turbomachinery components. The methodology is demonstrated by using a typical stator vane of an aero engine compressor and is based on Monte-Carlo and DOE simulations. The method consists of parametric sensitivity studies and identifies the most influential parameters that control the HCF endurance. Future ideas and roadmap of the aeromechanical probabilistic analyses capability development are discussed.

This platform will collect and provide long-term access to conference presentation videos, encompassing all technology areas within ASME's technical conference and events program. About 30,000-40,000 engineers across all mechanical engineering and related disciplines participate in ASME conferences each year. This includes authors of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 technical papers published by ASME, the majority of whom also submit video presentations for our virtual conferences. The video collection will be available as an add-on to existing product packages or as a separate subscription.
