The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of the PHLECS Full Body Blue Light device (CE class II, 453 nm) performed 5 times weekly (30 minutes each session) for 2 weeks on female COVID-19 sufferers who were not admitted to hospital. All the patients first presented to cardiologist then were referred to dermatologist with hair loss and/or dry skin complaints. At baseline and after 2 weeks of treatment the patients filed in validated questionnaires: SF-36 (Short Form-36 quality of life evaluation), FSS (Fatigue Severity Scale), DASS21 (The Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale) and own questionnaire on cognitive functions.
The study included 31 female patients. Only 14 patients (aged 21-71 years, mean±SD 49.57±12.2) completed the full treatment. The drop-outs were due to family issues raised during recruitment period. No serious side effects were reported during treatment. All the patients are under regular follow up of our dermatologist. The study was approved by the Medical University of Lodz Bioethics Committee. Program Jasp version 012.1, nonparametric Wilcoxon test and statistical significance at p<0.05 were employed. All 14 patients reported subjective feelings of mood improvement. None of the employed questionnaires demonstrated statistical significance between results obtained before and after 2-week blue light treatment (p>0.05). However, results in DASS-anxiety scale and cognitive scale presented clear tendency of improvement on such a small group (p=0.077 an 0.073, respectively).
In conclusion, having in mind limitations of the study – only from 14 female patients completed the full treatment – the obtained results seem to be very promising in improving selected psychological parameters and thus social functioning of the COVID-19 sufferers.
