Despite the relatively high capacity and energy density of Ni-rich layered oxides (NCM) as cathode materials, they still suffer from interfacial instability, sluggish charge transfer kinetics and detrimental side reactions, which causes deficient capacity retention and moderate rate capability. Herein we built a LiAlO2-Al2O3 hybrid coating layer on the LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cathode material to address its interfacial issues. We applied Al(OH)3 particles with site-directed adsorption to Li+ to remove the residual lithium on NCM surface during calcination. In the process, a LiAlO2 ion-conducting layer was produced and the excess Al precursors thermally decomposed to Al2O3, affording a superior chemical stability to the material. Benefiting from good ion conductivity of LiAlO2 and chemical stability of Al2O3, the modified materials exhibit enhanced rate capability and cycle stability, especially under elevated temperature. Additionally, a better storage stability is also achieved during 50 days’ storage test under ambient environment attributed to the toughened interface. We regard this hybrid coating strategy as a universal approach to address the interfacial issues of diverse lithium-containing layered cathode materials.
