One of the simplest ways to generate hydrogen is water electrolysis using suitable electrocatalysts. However, it is quite a challenging task to synthesize a bifunctional electrocatalyst for catalysing water splitting reaction involving the production of oxygen and hydrogen at anode and cathode respectively. In general, various progresses has been made in the field of transition metal-based selenides but the development of metal-organic framework (MOF) derived non-precious metal-based selenide nanostructures with various advantages demands additional effort. Herein, we have successfully synthesized a jasmine flower-like CoSe2 nanoplates derived from a Co-MOF precursor. The MOF-derived CoSe2 nanoarchitecture termed as MOF-D CoSe2 has various advantages over non-MOF-derived electrocatalysts. The flower-shaped CoSe2 nanoplates acts as a bifunctional electrocatalyst that needs an overpotential of 320 mV vs. RHE to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm-2 for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with a small Tafel slope of 60 mV dec-1. Additionally, the MOF-D CoSe2 shows excellent performance for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) which requires an overpotential of 195 mV vs. RHE to attain 10 mA cm-2 current density and small Tafel slope value of 43 mV dec-1. The significant stability of the electrocatalyst in both acidic as well as alkaline electrolytic conditions indicates its practical applicability as a suitable bifunctional electrocatalyst for water splitting. The bifunctional electrocatalytic behaviour of the flower-shaped CoSe2 nanoplates can be attributed to the unique surface morphology, high value of electrochemical accessible surface area and excellent durability in both acidic as well as alkaline electrolytic conditions. Furthermore, to investigate the actual catalytic behaviour of the electrocatalyst in both the electrolytic conditions the post catalytic analysis was also done in terms of PXRD, FESEM, XPS and ECSA.
