Data and Public Health: considering social & socioeconomic challenges

In this talk I will outline important issues around the availability and usage of datasets in relation to the study of health inequalities for public health and research purposes. Social inequalities in health have been documented across countries, over time, and replicate on new and emerging diseases, as we have seen throughout this Covid19 pandemic. To understand how health inequalities can be redressed we need data systems that allow us to monitor health inequalities over time using quality standardized social and health data. I will use examples from the French context during the Covid19 pandemic to underline considerations 1) when there is a lack of data containing both social and health variables and 2) when surveillance data have been used to describe health inequalities in Covid19. In both cases important ethical, policy and research questions arise. I will conclude by suggesting a way forward for standardized surveillance to improve both public health policy and research.
