People and health-promoting resources are not randomly distributed over space. Over the last decades, researchers have provided compelling evidence that social inequalities in access and exposure to build (e.g. parks, transport infrastructures, land-use mix, foodscape, amenities, etc.), and social (e.g., safety, social cohesion, neighborhood socio-economic status, etc.) neighborhood environmental characteristics are likely to translate into social inequalities in health.
This talk addresses some challenges when studying social inequalities in neighborhoods and health through a series of case studies. The first part of the presentation will be dedicated to the study of social inequalities in environmental exposures while considering individual’s daily motilities in exposure assessment, and the selective daily mobility bias. The second part of this presentation will discuss social inequalities in time-varying residential neighborhood effects by presenting preliminary results from the MET’HOOD project on how changes in exposures to the foodscape over ten years may be socially patterned, and whether residential relocation may play a role.

Camille Perchoux is a research associate in health geography at the Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research (LISER), within the Urban Development and Mobility department. With a background in Geography and Urban Planning (University of Provence, Aix-Marseille I), and a Ph.D. in Public Health Epidemiology (School of Public health, Montreal University; Sorbonne University), her work focuses on the influences on neighborhood effects on health and health behaviors. Specific interests include continuous assessment of environmental exposures in space and time, daily motilities, longitudinal design, time-varying neighborhood effects.
