<br/>A free, online, social annotation platform–Perusall–was successfully incorporated into a flipped, organic chemistry course sequence. The platform provides an interactive chat enhanced with social media features that facilitates students in engaging with each other as they watch videos in an asynchronous format. This technology transforms how students watch flipped content from an isolated experience to a collaborative one where they can ask questions, discuss ideas, and get feedback. The conversation threads are invaluable in guiding responsive mini-lectures in the classroom and pinpointing areas of confusion. Data analytics provided by the platform offered insight into viewing behaviors not typically provided by learning management systems. Student compliance was high and, overall, students had positive feedback about their learning experience using the platform. This technology is both easy to learn and implement, and it should be of interest to chemistry educators who want to improve student engagement with flipped content and/or instructors who are delivering content online in a hybrid or remote format.
