Significant research has been built upon the twelve principles of green chemistry in industry and academia. Through Beyond Benign’s Lead Teacher Program, middle and high school teachers have been sharing and developing their practice of green chemistry in the classroom. This presentation will share some case studies to illustrate these practices based on personal interviews and classroom observations with participating teachers. An initial framework will be proposed for how green chemistry can be adapted to K-12 classrooms including through lab safety, experimentation, teacher preparation, and student motivation. A rich folio of practical examples and wider perspectives for green chemistry in the classroom provides a compelling case and a roadmap for translating the principles into practice.
