Motivated both by antifreeze proteins (AFPs) and oriented attachment phenomena, we present a theoretical framework to estimate the kinetics of adsorption for approximately rigid structures that bind to surfaces at specific sites and specific orientations. In our model, the restricted orientations create create an entropically denuded layer near the binding site, giving rise to a well defined adsorption constant that (in some cases) can be derived in closed form. We quantify the entropic barriers and compare the implied resistances to resistances for diffusion through boundary layersI will present results on the kinetics of adsorption for long helical AFPs molecules at ice surfaces, and for adsorption of faceted nanoparticles. We comment on the potential effects beyond those in our "free draining" model, including hydrodynamic effects and forces between the particle and the surface.
