In 2017, Global R&D expenditures were about $2.2 trillion dollars, with the United States and China accounting for 25% and 23% of those expenditures, respectively.  Protecting and capturing value from an institution’s investment must include a rigorous approach to intellectual property.   A comprehensive intellectual property strategy will involve both offensive (i.e., value capture) and defensive (i.e., protection from another’s offensive use of intellectual property) aspects.   An effective intellectual property strategy is integral to an entity’s business strategy.  Approaches to six key elements of intellectual property strategy – Patenting, Trade Secrets and Confidential Information, Cooperation and Partnerships, Current Awareness, Publications, and Enforcement – can be tailored to match and enhance business strategy in a cost effective manner.
