Science is a global, collaborative, and interdisciplinary endeavor. Unfortunately, it is often difficult for chemistry students to fit study abroad experiences into their academic careers because of scheduling issues and the financial costs of such long-term programs abroad. Therefore, alternative methods of providing global learning experiences (GLE) for students need to be explored, and global experiences can be facilitated remotely over the internet using asynchronous and synchronous methods. In this presentation, a collaborative GLE module, which was integrated into an Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory course in the USA and a Nanotechnology and the Environment course in Brazil, will be described. Students in the USA and Brazil synthesized and characterized nanomaterials in the laboratory, and shared their results with the other group of students. They also worked remotely in groups with students from both institutions to generate infographics about issues relating to nanomaterials, society, and the environment. The key issues involved in planning and running such a collaborative Global Learning Experience will be highlighted, with the hope that other interested instructors will be galvanized to add a GLE module to their courses and increase global learning for chemistry students around the world.
