The size and loading amount of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) on the carrier is critical for their different application. Herein, we present a facile method to fabricate novel Tannin-coated catechol resin (TA-CFR) for in-situ synthesizing Ag NPs. In this study, TA-CFR microspheres act as both a green and highly efficient reducing agent and a support for converting silver ions into Ag NPs by an in situ reduction process, where the as-papered TA-CFR@Ag achieves super small size (~ 9.5 nm) and super high density of Ag NPs on the surface TA-CFR. Compared to that of CFR@Ag (without TA coating), the Ag loading capacity of TA-CFR is raised by 65.8 wt%. Additionally, as a capping agent, TA coating essentially minimizes the aggregation of Ag NPs, and the in situ-formed Ag-NPs are uniformly dispersed on the surface of CFR. Interestingly, it was found that the addition of TA wrapper has a negligibly effect on the size of resin spheres, but significantly promotes the stability and reusability of Ag NPs due to high surface charges and strong chelation. Furthermore, the TA coating technology also suit to other materials, such as SiO2, TiO2 and Fe3O4 and so on, provides a new frontier in the development of TA coating materials focusing on the synergistic effect of multiple functionalities of tannin.
