Instrumentation use and interpretation of associated results are an essential aspect of practicing chemistry; thus, knowledge and skills related to instrumentation are key to chemistry education. The instructional laboratory curriculum is where hands-on experiences with chemical instrumentation are gained. However, the availability of instrumentation and degree to which learners interact with instrumentation varies by course, department, and institution. In this exploratory survey research study, we identified what instrumentation is used in instructional laboratory courses across the postsecondary chemistry curriculum. Additionally, we identified barriers and opportunities for instrumentation inclusion in instructional laboratory courses. Our results provide a broad curricular overview and a foundation for further exploration of the instructional laboratory curriculum on a subdisciplinary level (e.g., physical chemistry, instrumental analysis, organic chemistry).
