Acceleration of heterogeneous catalysis science can be achieved through a variety of approaches such as catalyst discovery or hypothesis generation. High throughput synthesis and screening experiments can enable either or both of these approaches when appropriately coupled to ab initio theory and/or data science. Herein we will discuss complementary examples of accelerating catalysis science: discovering photoelectrocatalysts for oxygen evolution via theory-guided screening; understanding composition and structure relationships to oxygen evolution catalyst activity and stability by combining theory and experiment insights; and hypothesizing a scaling relationship from analysis of high throughput carbon dioxide electroreduction experiments. In each setting, high throughput experiment workflows must adapt to provide the appropriate measurements with a balance of throughput and quality that generate knowledge at a faster pace than traditional methods.
