Ligands containing a pendant base have been shown to have several beneficial effects in catalytic reactions, including rate increases or improving selectivity.  Electron-poor ligands have been shown to be capable of increasing the rate of reductive elimination and are a generally underexplored area of the literature.  To our knowledge, an electron-poor ligand with a pendant base has not yet been studied. With this in mind, a general synthetic route to synthesizing electron-poor bifunctional ligands was developed.  Metal complexes containing these ligands were also synthesized and the reactivity in a variety of organic transformations was investigated.
