We report the synthesis of oligophenylene vinyl (OPV) derivatives having SMe linker groups and their application as molecular wires in single molecule gold mechanically-controlled break junction. The conductance was found to be geometry-dependent. In the cis isomers, the conductance is independent of the number of SMe linkers, unlike in their trans counterparts, where the conductance drops by an order of magnitude upon moving from two to one SMe linker group. This suggests that the cis isomer is binding to the gold through one SMe linker, whereas the trans binds through both SMe linkers. We also report a synthetic approach to enable OPV derivatives with four SMe linker groups.
